Barracuda Email Protection bundles its Sentinel AI engine with traditional gateway filtering to create a layered email defense designed specifically for Microsoft 365 environments. The Sentinel component is what differentiates Barracuda in the SMB market: it uses AI trained on each organization's internal communication patterns to detect anomalies that indicate account takeover or spear-phishing, without requiring MX record changes.

Deployment for Sentinel is uniquely API-based — it connects directly to Microsoft 365 through the Graph API, scans historical email to build behavioral baselines, and then begins flagging suspicious patterns. This means smaller IT teams can deploy advanced protection in under an hour without reconfiguring email flow.

The gateway component handles traditional threats: spam filtering, virus scanning, link protection, and attachment sandboxing. Domain Fraud Protection (DMARC, DKIM, SPF enforcement and reporting) is included in higher tiers.

Barracuda's pricing is among the most accessible in enterprise email security, starting around $2.50/user/month for the Core plan. The full bundle with Sentinel, incident response, and domain fraud protection runs approximately $5–$7/user/month, making it competitive for organizations with 50–500 seats that cannot justify Proofpoint enterprise pricing.
